We are the Animal Kindness Coalition (AKC), a team of dedicated rescuers, feeders, and animal advocates who have united to advocate, protect, and care for the animals within our communities. Our journey began with a simple goal: to find a humane and effective solution to the stray population dilemma in Malaysia. Officially registered as a non-governmental organization (NGO) on 7 July 2023, we are committed to forging a new path for animal welfare in the nation.

Our Vision & Mission

Our principles guide every action we take, ensuring we stay true to our core purpose.

  • Our Vision: We envision a stray-free Malaysia by promoting a community-minded approach towards animal welfare. Our aim is to create a safe, compassionate, and inclusive environment for both humans and animals.
  • Our Mission: We strive to create a kinder society by embracing the Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return-Manage (TNVRM) program. Alongside this, we advocate for Responsible Pet Ownership to curb the main source of stray overpopulation. Together, we can build a safe and inclusive environment where humans and animals co-exist in harmony.

Meet Our Leadership

Our organization is powered by experienced and passionate individuals.

Asther Lau - Founder & President

Asther grew up with adopted puppies and as a teenager worked with the Malaysian Kennel Association in Sarawak. In 2019, Asther accidentally got into animal rescue work when seeking a solution to the stray over-population in Damansara Perdana. Since then, there was no turning back as she brought together like-minded individuals, communities and council members, strongly advocating for more humane and effective solutions to curb the stray population.

William Lim - Vice President

William’s first ever rescue was his own dog back in 2017. He actively started feeding strays in the Ara Damansara area. Meeting other feeders on his journey, William and his friends started to feed, rescue, neuter, rehome & release together. Over the last 4 years, they have rehomed closed to 70 dogs and neutered more than 100. An avid supporter of TNVRM efforts, he hopes that Malaysia will adopt this approach to manage the stray dog population humanely.

Lim Hsin Yee - Treasurer

In early 2022, Hsin Yee found about 40 stray dogs near a school in Bandar Utama. This became a safety concern for residents and the school. Hsin Yee united various friends, NGOs, shelters and vets to come together for this cause. She worked tirelessly and achieved her goal to neuter all the strays in the area. While humbly stating that she is not a superwoman, she is happy to announce that only 5 of the 40 dogs have remained on the street. These 5 dogs now help to protect the area and have been accepted by the residents and school.

Jo Yong - Secretary

Jo joined AKC in 2022 after adopting her “furry boss,” which sparked her interest in animal care and the wider welfare issues in Malaysia. Introduced to TNRM and the AKC community, she stepped into the role of Secretary and has since been learning and contributing while balancing her work in compliance at a Resource Recovery and Disposal Complex in Johor Bahru.

Jo hopes to play a bigger part in AKC’s on-the-ground efforts and strongly believes in its vision of building harmonious communities where strays are accepted as community pets and responsible ownership becomes the norm – moving forward one step at a time.

Jasmin Teoh - Vice Secretary

In Jasmin’s household, the dogs were there before she was born and there wasn’t a time when there were no animals in her home. She started out feeding stray dogs in her residential area and stray cats in her office car park. She has successfully trapped and neutered cats and dogs alike, although some of them ended up remaining in her home. Jasmin firmly believes that the TNRM method is the only way to go and hopes to see a reduction in stray animal population with the efforts of AKC in the years to come.

Chan Chui Shia - EXCO Member

Chui Shia’s first step into animal welfare began over 10 years ago when she volunteered at a fundraising event for Cherish Life Home. Today, she continues her passion as the founder of Barkery Oven, creating allergy-safe treats for cats and dogs.

At AKC, she assists with fundraising and is inspired by the team’s dedication to carrying out TNRM despite the many challenges – from limited resources to public resistance and lack of government support. She hopes to see the government embrace TNRM as the only humane solution to stray management, pet owners taking full responsibility, and animal welfare included in school curriculums.

Christine Chin - EXCO Member

Christine’s journey into animal welfare started when she witnessed the suffering and mistreatment of the stray animal population. Wanting to make a difference to their lives Christine joined AKC as she firmly believes that the trap, neuter and release program helps to manage the issue humanely leading to improved health and wellbeing of the animals. She looks forward to a future where AKC’s efforts can significantly reduce the number of stray dogs and a harmonious co-existence between humans and animals.
